The Chain Stitch (CH) is the first stitch you'll learn in crochet. All you need is a crochet hook and some yarn. Begin with your crochet hook in a Slip Knot loop. Yarn Over (place the yarn over the hook from back to front), then pull it through your loop. This is one chain stitch. The only other way I begin a project is with the Magic Circle, which can only be used for projects crocheted in the round (in a circle). This is an easy pattern to make a small star applique. The size of your hook and yarn will determine the size of the end result. I used a H/5mm hook with worsted weight yarn and my star is about 2.5 inches across from point to opposite point. Perfect for sewing on to just about anything!
