Basic Baby Beanie - Free Crochet Pattern

This basic beanie is made with the simple double crochet stitch and works up quickly. I like to add a row of half double crochets at the end to give it more of a finished look and prevent it from stretching too much so it fits better. This beanie looks great plain as is or you can add appliques to it and dress it up.

All Sizes Begin the Same:

Begin with a magic circle (tutorial here), CH 2.

RND1: DC 10 in center of circle. Pull beginning yarn tail to close the magic circle. Join with SL ST in top of first DC. CH2.

RND2: 2DC in same stitch and in each stitch around (count=20 DC). Join with SL ST in top of 1st DC. CH2. Circle may not lay completely flat anymore and this is correct. Hat is designed to have a rounded top.

RND3: 1DC in same stitch. 2DC in next stitch. Repeat the pattern (1DC, 2DC) all the way around. (Count=30) Join with SL ST in top of first DC. CH2.

RND4: DC in same stitch and in next stitch. 2DC in next stitch. Repeat the pattern (1DC, 1DC, 2DC) all the way around. (Count= 40). Join with SL ST in top of 1st DC. CH2.

At this point, your circle should be starting to form a bowl shape, with the right side of the bowl on the inside. Flip it inside out so that the wrong side is in the inside of the bowl shape and right side (side you are working on) is on the outside.
